As it gets ready to increase social media screening of student visa applicants, the administration of US President Donald Trump has directed embassies to cease making appointments for these visas. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a copy of a memo sent to diplomatic posts that the state department memo, which was seen by CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, instructed US embassies on Tuesday to take any open appointments for visa-seeking students off their calendars, but that those with appointments already set could proceed. The State Department was getting ready to “extension of mandated social media screening and vetting” that would apply to all student visa applications, according to the diplomatic cable. What the screening would look for is not specified. According to The Guardian, the Trump administration had previously tightened its scrutiny of student social media, concentrating on those that supported “terrorist activities” in general. The newspaper connected this to a larger Trump crackdown on pro-Palestinian demonstrations on American universities in its March investigation.
